Red Rock Canyon is an incredible display of Aztec Sandstone just minutes from Las Vegas. Experts say it is the most studied and famous geographic fault in the world. It is a photographer's dream come true with scheduled photo stops including ancient Indian petroglyphs, pictographs and Agave roasting pits, and desert springs. The three thousand-foot tall, multi colored, Wilson cliffs (which are ancient sand dunes) are breathtaking. Many movies have been filmed here.

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park (Howard Hughes Ranch)
In the 1830s-40s, the meadows of the Ranch were camping sites for Utes and mountain men passing through the area. One of those mountain men, Bill Williams, used the site for horses that he "acquired" in raids of ranches in California often enough that the site became known as the Old Bill Williams Ranch.
The 1860s Blacksmith Shop and Sandstone Cabins are the second oldest buildings in the Las Vegas area, (The Old Mormon Fort in downtown Las Vegas being the oldest building in Nevada) built at the time that James B. Wilson filed a claim on the property and named it the Sandstone Ranch. A friend of the Wilson family, Willard George, acquired the ranch in 1929. George eventually raised chinchillas and cattle on the property.
In 1944, Chet Lauck ("Lum" of the famous radio team of "Lum and Abner") took the ranch and renamed it, the Bar Nothing Ranch. He and his friend Don Ameche of movie fame, raised race horses and cattle on the ranch.
It was named Spring Mountain Ranch in 1955, when it was purchased by Vera Krupp, the German movie star who owned the famous Krupp diamond after marrying the German munitions tycoon Baron Alfred Krupp. It became her principal residence until 1967, when she sold the ranch to Howard Hughes. She added a swimming pool and a secret passageway to the ranch house.
Hughes sold the ranch to two local business men in 1972, who intended to make a housing development on the site. The State bought it instead and turned it into a park.
